Apple Starts Selling Mophie’s Take On AirPower
AUG
9
There’s no shortage of AirPower knockoffs on the market. Many have been in the works since Apple took the wraps off its in-house version, positioned as more affordable alternatives. Since the company unceremoniously pulled the plug on the project, however, they’re the only game in town. We reviewed a $99 one a while ago. It seemed fine, and Amazon is currently overloaded with even more affordable options. It’s probably unfair to lump Mophie in the knockoff category. The accessory maker produces pretty premium products at prices to match. And unlike the competition, it’s got the Apple seal of approval. [MORE]

The Burning Man Art You Have To See This Year: The Folly
AUG
8
Much of Burning Man's allure centers around the sound camps and art cars, coupled with a quirky vernacular all its own. However, the soul of Black Rock City has always resided within the structures, the artists and the builders. In 1990, when the event moved from Baker Beach to the high-desert of Nevada, known as Black Rock Desert or simply "the playa", this vast landscape quickly became a canvas for a rag-tag troupe of brilliant nerds to flex their engineering ingenuity. They came to explore the furthest reaches of pure creation with absolute freedom, to test the boundaries of human resilience, to reimagine a model for communal connection, and to celebrate this sliver of time we all share with shenanigans and pyrotechnics. Today, the Burning Man Organization builds three main structures: Center Camp, The Man, and The Temple. Most everything else - all of the art, the camps and the performances - are manifested by the citizens themselves, by Burners, who put years of their lives into these tangible notions of radical self expression and cultural commentary. Apple Music Has Launched A New Analytics Tool For Artists
AUG
8
Today, Apple has launched Apple Music For Artists - a new analytics tool for every artist on the music streaming platform. Available on iOS as a desktop interface and standalone mobile app, Apple Music For Artists gives anyone who has music posted on Apple Music the ability to pinpoint how their various releases perform in specific markets and cities around the world. The tool also allows artists to monitor the extent of their streaming plays on Apple Music - both generated by playlists and 'organic' plays from fans - as well as their album and song sales on iTunes. In addition, a basic count of an artist's daily streams can be broken down by song and city in over 100 countries. This gives artists the ability to plan tours, discover hidden pockets of popularity and help them shape their setlists for wherever they plan on performing. The app is also taking steps to put Shazam data front and center, giving artists an insight as to where and when their music has been most 'Shazam'd. [MORE]

NYC Extends Cap On Uber, For-hire Vehicles And Adds A ‘cruising Cap’
AUG
7
It’s official: New York City’s cap on the number of for-hire vehicles that can operate on its streets will continue—and a new provision will, in theory, limit the amount of time FHVs can spend idling without passengers. NYC’s Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) voted unanimously to extend the original limitation on the number of licenses that can be issued; there are around 120,000 in use currently, more than double the number of licenses that had been issued five years ago. The agency also voted to enact a new “cruising cap,” which is intended to reduce the number of vehicles that roam throughout the city without passengers. According to the TLC, 41 percent of the time FHVs are on the road is spent idling; under the new provision, app companies will need to reduce that number to 36 percent within six months, and to 31 percent within a year. NYC Housing Construction Struggles To Keep Pace With Job Growth
AUG
1
New York City’s housing construction has continued its struggle to keep pace with the city’s job creation, according to a new study by listing platform Apartment List. The survey reviewed data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics between 2008 and 2018, finding that an average of two new housing units per 1,000 residents were permitted in New York, but over that same period the city added some four jobs per 1,000 residents. Even as New York City’s population has shrunk over the past couple of years, it has created jobs at a faster pace than the U.S. as a whole, which saw 1.7 percent job growth in the 12 months between July 2017 and July 2018, according to census data. How To Have The Coolest Day In NYC
AUG
1
It’s hard to stay cool in NYC. And I don’t *just* mean cool, like hip or trendy. I mean cool like not sweating through your ballet flats that your mom told you make you look professional as you regret getting on that subway car without AC. This summer I decided to skip some of the #basic, "beat the heat" NYC summer activities, like walking across the Brooklyn Bridge or drinking frosé at an outdoor rooftop (not frosé-shaming, but even you know it’s basic), and instead set off on a mission to find unique spots to chill (literally), worthy of a ‘gram or two. Want To Rent In Manhattan? Here’s How Much You Need To Make
AUG
1
It’s no secret that New York City is a very expensive place to live, and that rents are soaring—especially in Manhattan, where just last month the median rent reached an average of $4,190/month. But with costs dramatically increasing, are New Yorkers’ salaries keeping pace? (Spoiler alert: Not really.) A new StreetEasy study looked into how much New Yorkers would need to make annually to be able to afford the median rent in a one-bedroom or studio in neighborhoods with at least 250 available rentals in 2019, assuming they spend 40 percent or less of their gross income on rent. As expected, several New York City neighborhoods are in the “Six-Figure Club,” as residents would need to make six figures to be able to afford living in a one-bedroom there. In Manhattan, the neighborhoods where residents need to make the most are Tribeca at $171,800/year of gross income; Flatiron, $160,000/year; and Battery Park City, $152,000/year. Other neighborhoods that would require six digit incomes in the borough include Midtown South, Stuyvesant Town, and Chelsea. New additions to the six-digit list in Manhattan include the Lower East Side, where you now need to make $104,520/year. [MORE]

The Story Behind One Of NYC’s Most Mysterious Buildings And Its Longtime Owner
JUL
31
For decades, the six-story building at 190 Bowery, locally known as The Bank, was a mystery to New Yorkers. The Renaissance Revival-style building, covered in graffiti and grime, was often mistaken as abandoned. It stood unchanging as the surrounding streets morphed from rundown into one of the city’s most sought-after areas. But unbeknownst to most passersby, famed photographer Jay Maisel called the 36,000-square-foot building, which once housed the Germania Bank, home with his wife and daughter from 1966 to 2015. A 2008 New York Magazine profile shed more light on the landmarked relic and its unseen occupants—but it wasn’t until 2015, when the building was sold and news of Maisel’s move from the corner of Bowery and Spring streets broke, that we got a glimpse inside. Now, a new documentary, Jay Myself, paints an intimate portrait of Maisel—his craft, his vast collection of objects, and the life he built in the fabled building—told by his protégé, photographer Stephen Wilkes. A New Yorker's Guide To Partying In L.A.
JUL
30
New Yorkers know how to party, but there's something different in the water in Los Angeles. Partying there is a completely different vibe - the venues are bigger, the talent pool is wider and money is never a concern when opening up a new club (or reinventing an old one). The best part about partying in L.A. is that you never know who you're going to be rubbing elbows with; you might bump into a record producer at low-key Station behind the W Hotel, or you might bump into Paris Hilton at our favorite steakhouse, Meat on Ocean. Your weekend in L.A. can be as crazy as you want it to be, but you must go with an open mind and a love of dancing, booze, and rooftop pools. From swanky hotel scenes to insane venues that give House of Yes a run for its money, click through for some of our latest L.A. faves. Now that we have the best hotels in the city covered, it's time we move on to dining. Let's take a little trip to Santa Monica harbor, where the 11,000 square foot Meat on Ocean serves an impressive meat-focused menu, as its name would suggest. [MORE]

US Politicians Join Calls To Free A$AP Rocky
JUL
18
The international calls to free A$AP Rocky from imprisonment in Sweden are swelling, with a number of politicians in the USA taking the issue to Washington. Hakeem Jeffries and André Carson, Representatives for New York and Indiana respectively and members of the Congressional Black Caucus, as well as New York Representative and member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Adriano Espaillat, will demand Rocky is freed from the reported “horrific" conditions he’s being detained in. Jeffries said: "It appears that the hip hop police for years have been targeting rappers in New York and in other parts of the country have now shown the world that it's not just a United States phenomenon. "You can expect that members of Congress, particularly those of use who are part of the Congressional Black Caucus, are going to continue to weigh in forcefully until ASAP Rocky is free.” A Change petition to free Rocky has also gained more than 600,000 signatures signatures. Swedish prosecutors have until Friday to make a decision on whether the rapper will remain in custody. [MORE]
