Detroit is a city that holds a special place in the hearts of dance music fans. As the birthplace of techno, its influence on the direction of our scene is almost impossible to overstate. Even today, almost three decades after the genre's birth and subsequent search for surrogate homes, Detroit continues to be a place of pilgrimage for ravers seeking that darker, raw sound.
Scene pioneers Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Carl Craig and Stacey Pullen all hail from Detroit, and took the city's bleak, post-industrial aesthetic of the 80s as a leap off point to create a futuristic sound that removed young people from Detroit's abject economic struggles.
We spoke to first-wave heavyweight and enduring local legend Kevin Saunderson to give us a guide to his Detroit so that all y'all donning black and heading to the Rust Belt for Movement festival this weekend know some of the hidden gems in Motor City. |
