| As yet there’s no electronic music Hall of Fame – imagine the arguments? – but Layo Paskin and Matthew ‘Bushwacka!’ Benjamin would have a plinth if there was. Clubs, legendary nights, tracks, remixes, labels… from The End to Shake It! and ‘Love Story’ to Olmeto, the London duo never sit still. ‘Rising & Falling’ proves their mojo is intact. There’s a golden sheen to their first album for six years, a crispness to the percussion and a bubbling drive throughout. It takes in buzzy, tech-house cuts (see ‘Raw Defined’, with its cheeky Larry Heard and hardcore samples); dubby, sensual techno (‘Emotional Intelligence’); moody down tempo (‘Close To Me’) and that old L&B! staple, breakbeat house (‘The Way Home’). Eclectic, then, but in a focused, laser-targeted bomb sense. |
