| Formerly a fine art student part-time at Sheffield University, Scruff decided to explore his strange passion both in rounded line drawings and music. He started making tapes in 1983 using the very finest in pause button technology. His passion for hearing music that he couldn’t hear out anywhere else led him into the world of DJing - first of all as a kid with one deck - then hearing electro albums and being determined to mix. The result was that by 1994 he was out DJing in clubs.
Since his first vinyl excursion he has recorded for over 25 labels including Warp, Sirkus, Disorient, Blood & Fire, Cup Of Tea and, of course, Ninja Tune. He’s worked with Mark Rae and Grand Central. He has DJed all over the bloody shop, turning down more gigs than he takes on.
Scruff''s musical talent combined with his quirks such as his unique, distinctive self-designed artwork and the serving of brews at all his shows has led him to achieve a level of infamy that only the very best can hope for.
Mr Scruff will be returning to Leeds this autumn, bringing his infamous tea-pot and stall along with his decks to present his infamous Keep it Unreal show to Canal Mills.
The perfect setting for such a pioneering act, Mr Scruff promises to bring even more diversity to the already innovative venue. The perfect platform to sample and mix a selection of jazz, soul, hip hop, funk, disco, deep house, reggae, dubstep, afrobeat, latin, and electrofunk, we are thrilled to be welcoming such a melting pot of musical variety.
The self proclaimed “producer, doodler and tea drinker” is set to feel right at home here at Canal Mills - an ideal platform from which the master of the decks and brews can really flaunt his skills as one of today’s most pioneering DJs.
Returning to Leeds for the first time since the start of this year, this set is a long time coming and an absolute must for anyone wanting to rave to some unique beats in a distinctive setting to match. |
