Mixtapes that need to segue from Flying Lotus to Odd Nosdam always have the work of Matthewdavid to turn to, and as co-owner of the left-field beathead haven Leaving Records, the man born Matthew David McQueen has earned enough avant karma to indulge himself, maybe even in this life. His 2014 effort for Brainfeeder is either an old '80s tape from some lost Prince protégé that has suffered from some interstellar deterioration along with some wicked wow and flutter, or it's a pranky slice of freakbeat that demands "on acid" comparisons, such as "New Edition on acid," "Drake on acid," and most often, "R. Kelly on Acid." Check "Next to You Always" for some creepy come-ons delivered through a wall of melting chillwave or "Perpetual Moon Moods," which might actually be a Swishahouse screwed & chopped remix of the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" that was boosted and dropped here. Then there's the beautiful "Artforms," which just sounds like George Harrison with the goddess Shiva on the turntables, while the sputtering "West Coast Jungle Juke" suggests the artist has died, gone to limbo, attended limbo's booty bars, and then brought back the recordings. In My World is an argument that the drugs out there are getting better, and maybe even too good.
