| A security breach that researchers say affected thousands of visitors to YahooYHOO -0.44% websites in recent days shines a light on the use of online ads as a way to spread malicious software.
Yahoo took down advertisements containing malware that is says were shown to visitors of its sites in Europe between Dec. 31 and Jan. 3, the company said today in an emailed statement.
Security researchers at Fox-IT said in a blog post that the exploit infected the computers of about 27,000 users an hour during the attack, which focused on users in Romania, Britain and France. Fox-IT discovered the attack Jan. 3 and alerted Yahoo that day before publishing its findings, Joost Bijl, marketing manager at the security firm, said. |
