When a group of civil rights activists saw the mounting need in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico following devastating hurricanes, they had an epiphany: It's on us. Unsatisfied with the speed in which disaster relief flowed into ravaged areas, they made a choice. They weren't going to wait for the government or established nonprofits to respond. They would do it themselves. But how? They turned to Amazon Wish Lists and harnessed the power of social media. The results have been extraordinary. Since its inception two months ago, the American Black Cross has netted $3.5 million dollars in donated goods and has a volunteer list of nearly 2,000. The organization has a core volunteer team of about 20 to 30 people working on a day-to-day basis.
