In a world in which beat syncing, pre-recorded sets and a plethora of flashing buttons are said to have replaced the time-honed skills of the DJ, a new technology from a company called Thalmic Labs threatens to make the entire performance hands-free. Teaming up with Dutch trance titan Armin Van Buuren, the company have announced a new technology called 'Myo' which is a muscle-controlled armband that allows the modern DJ to control the mixer or their light show by repeatedly fist pumping the sky and flailing their arms in a controlled fashion. “I always love to involve new ideas into my show" said Van Buuren. "Crowd interaction is absolutely key to me and the Myo helps me with this. It can create a unique experience for the clubber and it feels like I’m even closer to them.” In a short promo video released on YouTube, we can see the Van Buuren bouncing around on stage and throwing mad shapes as the wristband controls his epic light show. The device can also control volume, pitch, tone and tempo, and is compatible with a variety of tools including Ableton, Serato, Traktor Garage Band and Logic Pro. A liberating development for the visually-inclined modern DJ, or another sign that we're becoming less interested in technique and track selection?
