In a move that will likely see the vinyl sniffers recoil in horror, Technics have announced that they are getting in on the online downloads game with their new site Technics Tracks, which is expected to launch in January. Much like Neil Young’s Pono, Technics Tracks will specialize in high-quality audio files, with the bulk of their catalogue made up of 24-bit FLAC files, though there will be some standard 44kHz 16-bit tracks on offer too. In a press release about the new platform Technic’s head of brand strategy David Preece noted that the company would also start making a move into the content business. “Technics Tracks is a platform where listeners can not only download their favourite tracks in stunning 24-bit quality but will also be a rich source of news and editorial content on hi-res audio releases: another step in supporting our ultimate goal of bringing the world’s highest-class audio experience to serious music lovers.” The company’s prioritization of high-quality audio files is sure to win plaudits with industry audiophiles, though marching fresh into a world more or less dominated by iTunes and Beatport isn’t going to be easy. We’re curious to see how the company that pioneered DJ equipment can reinvent itself in the 21st century.
