| Say goodbye to the old Essex Street Market: After this Sunday, May 5, the market’s longtime home on Essex Street between Delancey and Rivington streets will close as 21 of its vendors prepare for their move to a new building across the street. The market announced the closing date on its website.
The move has been in the works for years, with a new Essex Street Market planned for the tower rising at 125 Delancey Street, which is also home to the recently opened Regal Cinemas movie theater, as well as close to 200 rentals. The new market will span 37,000 square feet—a huge increase in size from the current space—and will welcome 18 new restaurateurs and food purveyors, including Roni-Sue’s Chocolates (which previously set up shop in the old market) and a new stall from the folks behind Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. The new market is expected to open sometime in the next few weeks.
But pour one out for the old, nearly 80-year-old market; as Camera Obscura columnist Nathan Kensinger wrote last year, “a stroll through the Essex Street Market is still a comforting visit to an older Manhattan, one not driven mad by the latest food fads, or obsessed with glossy new food halls.”
A warehouse behind the old market building has already been demolished, with the market itself eventually facing the same fate. Affordable senior housing will rise on that site. |
