Steve Aoki has revealed he's started working on deep house tunes, but won't be releasing them under his own name. Mixmag spoke to the Dim Mak boss over tea and cakes at the Savoy Hotel in London (the customised cupcakes pictured above). Topics covered included his new album 'Neon Future 1', his cake throwing and his new work under a different alias. Speaking about playing at Cafe Mambo in Ibiza this summer, he said how this inspired him to move into deep house: "That kind of environment, the banging stuff just doesn't work, so I was playing house: Maceo Plex, Ten Walls, Tiga's collaborations, Duke Dumont and some more underground stuff. "I won't release it under Steve Aoki, it'll be under another name. I don't want to confuse people who associate me with my usual sound, and I want it to be judged on its own merits. We'll see how it does." But even though he's dipping his toe into a new musical direction, the cake throwing is staying. "People expect it now. I won't stop unless I think of something better. I used to stage dive all the time and the raft was the next stage," he explains. "My intention is to showcase music, but the way I see it is that the different props are there to raise the energy and emotion: if people are enjoying themselves then it's working. To me it's not a distraction from the music, it's a supplement." 'Neon Future 1' is out now on Ultra Music / Dim Mak. He promises the album is electro, not deep house.
